Co-directing and collaborating with the musician himself - Hamish Ford - we drew from his music’s industrious yet aquatic sound. Taking the lead song - Heartbeat/One Sun - and its Big Energy Remix, we conceived of a surrealist portrait of London and all its sordid intricacies. The story unfolds as a day in a life, with unpredictable twists timed to its chaotic rhythm.
Hamish wanted a gritty look and feel. To achieve that, we filmed everything with Rayband Meta Glasses, giving it roughened edges and creating true wide-angled POV.
Reminiscent of silent cinema, the music video is subtitled and captioned, though often as manifestation of internalised thoughts. To individualise this, we worked alongside skilful artist - Thea Ng - to make two original fonts for such use. One was done for the amphibious monster (as seeable in the thumbnail), whilst the other (Gothic typography mixed with imperfect precision) is universal to all of the other characters.
For the monstrous transformation, at the end, we worked alongside two talented makeup artists: Mollie Cowen and Holly Paeckmeyer. They helped realise our vision of an amphibious, grungy man.
As of now, the film is premiering at the Arthouse Cinema, on the 17th of December.
